Hong Kong, China authorities are investigating a distressing online romance scam that has defrauded a 55-year-old Italian man of HK$14.2 million (CNY¥12,443,318).
The victim, who reported the incident to the police on March 25th 2023, stated that he had developed a romantic relationship with a woman whom he had met on WhatsApp.
Tragically, this romance was just a ruse as the woman convinced him to invest in virtual currency, and he complied by transferring a total of HK$14,200,000 to nine local bank accounts designated by the fraudster between 6th and 23rd March.
The victim was left completely devastated after he realized that he had been conned and that he could not recover any of the money he had sent.
The Italian man's experience highlights the disturbing trend of online romance scams that are becoming more prevalent in today's digital age. It is a worrying development that requires urgent attention from authorities globally.
